On Saturday 22 August I spent the day painting from a single sustained portrait pose at Sam Clayden's studio near Oval.
The session ran from 10am to 5pm in a studio lit by a north-facing skylight. It was untutored: a live model held one pose for the day, and everyone worked independently.
The day concentrated on observing proportion, structure, form and light the things a long pose gives you time to keep looking at, and to keep correcting.
It was organised by Sam Clayden, a portrait painter who exhibits regularly with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
