Trees of rust and electric blue, a bright sun illuminating mountains made of interlocking shapes and solid patterns: this evocative painting captures a bucolic scene that speaks to the imagination. The use of warm, textured patterns serves both to portray sprawling fields and to emphasise a dreamlike atmosphere. The artificial patterns of land division, created by separation between fields, turn into multicoloured hills and vales; it is easy to imagine this landscape stretching as far as the eye can see. Sevenoaks captures the attention and invites contemplation, recalling the energy of the art movement Cubism where objects were painted from different angles in the same picture so as to appear fragmented.
